The site

The Hôpitaux Robert Schuman group is one of Luxembourg’s four major healthcare providers, formed from the merger of the Bohler, Kirchberg, ZithaKlinik and Sainte-Marie clinics. It employs around 2,300 professionals, collaborates with 310 doctors, and serves a national population of over 678,000 residents. HRS is a national reference for advanced digital healthcare and operates within Luxembourg’s secure HealthNet network, managed by the eSanté Agency. What makes this pilot distinctive is the combination of strong cybersecurity protection with innovative mobile and telehealth services, given HealthNet’s strict access limitations.

Challenges

HRS is undergoing accelerated digitalisation of care with the massive integration of connected devices: biomedical equipment, hospital OT, medical IoT and implants. At the same time, the growing number of cyberattacks against European hospitals has demonstrated that an intrusion can compromise the availability of care, disrupt vital equipment or corrupt medical data. Ransomware and data manipulation could disrupt patient care or compromise device integrity.

Objectives

  • Strengthen the security of biomedical and hospital OT devices through continuous monitoring and AI-driven anomaly detection.
  • Extend cybersecurity to mobile patients by experimenting with secure infrastructures for implants, IoT devices and ambulances.
  • Leverage AI for predictive protection by analysing device behaviour, network traffic and patient data patterns to anticipate incidents before they cause harm.
  • Evaluate the added value of 5G slicing as a complementary, secure, isolated mobile communication channel.
  • Develop an EU-interoperable approach, adaptable to Luxembourg’s framework but reproducible across Member States without altering their infrastructures.

Use cases

    Secured biomedical devices

    A real-time, AI-enhanced supervision platform monitors infusion pumps and vital-sign monitors. By learning baseline patterns, the AI detects anomalies, blocks suspicious commands and triggers automated alerts to clinical staff.

    Connected ambulances and secure data transfer

    A dedicated 5G health slice transmits encrypted patient data from ambulances to the hospital. AI analytics detect irregularities in both clinical data and network behaviour, recommending triage actions before arrival.

  3. 3

    Secure medical implants and remote monitoring

    AI continuously analyses telemetry from implants such as pacemakers and insulin pumps located at patients’ homes, through a HealthNet-certified 5G gateway. Any deviation prompts alerts to clinicians for rapid intervention.
